As you may already know, there are so many people out there and all around the world that dream of becoming a successful fashion designer. And you are one more person that wants that too, so you've got a lot of competition ahead of you. The thing is, that you may be very good at what you do but that is not enough. Why? Because just like you, all those others aspirants have talent as well. So in order to succeed in the fashion industry you have to stand out, that way you start getting recognized. To guide and orientate you a little bit, in this article you will learn many useful things. For instance, what skills are essential for this career, and some other tips that talk about how you can not only start your career, but make it good and lasting one. So, first of all, let's talk about skills. Having the right skills is key to become a fashion designer. You may not have some of them but you have to learn them and develop them as much as you can. Remember, the more skills, the better. These are the most important ones: Attention to Detail: Every fashion designer need to have and excellent eye for all details, even the tiny ones. The job does require being careful and thorough whenever you're completing a task.
Creativity: This is obvious, but it's worth mentioning. There is no point in trying to become a fashion designer if you don't have enough vision to design something new. Flexibility: You need to be open to change whether you like it or not as well as getting used to not working alone. You will have to work with other people most of the time so being able to cooperate and accepting other's ideas is essential. Independence: Job requires developing one's own ways of doing things, guiding oneself with little or no supervision, and depending on oneself to get things done. Effort and Achievement: Job requires establishing and maintaining personally challenging achievement goals and exerting effort toward mastering tasks. They are not that hard right? But now, let's move into something else that is extremely crucial and just so important and basic to getting a career in fashion: internships. They are an amazing platform to start off from. Internships are very important for you career for a lot of reasons. The first reason is that you will gain very valuable experience. You will start to understand how the fashion industry really works; you'll see it from the inside and not just imagine it with what people have told you. The second reason is that you will start to meet a lot of people. People that already have an established career in the industry. As you may already know, it is always good to have connections everywhere. So an internships will give you the opportunity to have those connections which can be of great help in the future. Now, here is another great tip: get employed. If you are still at college, that's the time for internships, but if you graduated already you need to find a job. Even if you still can't get the one you want you need some income as well as a reference. As the great Anna Wintour said: “Go get a job. Whether it’s working as a designer or working in a restaurant and then doing your own thing in your own time. It’s a reality of life." she said "In the end it’s going to be helpful to you and so many others.” Okay, so this next tip is not completely necessary, but it can be of great help. Start your own fashion blog. Now with the internet everything is easier, and a blog is a way to show how talented you are. Many bloggers –but only dedicated ones– get invited to local fashion events, and just like with internships, this will give you the opportunity to network and meet others in the industry. And you don't have to be a tech genius to have one. Creating an Instagram or Tumblr account will do the trick. Just remember that you won't get a million visitors or followers the next day, it takes dedication. And talking about not getting famous from one day to another, here comes the next tip: be patient. No designer goes from nada to Prada in a week… or a year. Have reasonable expectations and you won't get disappointed, but don't forget to aim high and set goals. It can take you a lot of time but if you are patient and don't quit, you could be the next designer to steal the spotlight in all the Fashion Weeks from New York to Paris and more. So be realistic but don't forget you can get there eventually. And this last one you've probably already heard from everybody a thousand times, but let's make it a thousand and one: work hard. No successful fashion designer was sitting at home waiting for fame and success to knock on their door. They went out to look for it. You have to give your 110% in order to get a relevant career, you can't give less than that. The fashion industry is one of the toughest and most competitive ones, so not working hard and not giving your best effort can't be an option. So hopefully this tips will help you throughout your career. Remember that you are not the only person that wants success, many want that too. So be innovative, creative. Be different. That is the only way you will stand out. And in fact, only the people that are able to stand out from everyone else are the one who can say they made it in the fashion industry. Have faith in yourself, believe that you are talented and creative enough. Don't forget that out of all people, the one that has to believe in you the most is yourself. Why? Because nobody –and I really mean nobody– will believe in you if they see you don't believe in yourself.
